Making Websites Personal: The Digital Home Approach

A website’s role is to communicate, convert, connect, and enhance a brand.

When a brand takes a thoughtful approach to build and discover its identity, it inevitably becomes unique. Whatever the industry, even if it’s saturated (and let’s face it, what isn’t anymore?), I truly believe that every brand can find its niche audience. There’s always something distinct about the way an offering is delivered, approached, or built. Take a brand designer’s website as an example.

We both know there are countless brand designers out there. Yet, when you explore their websites, you feel the difference between one and another. It’s a lot like stepping into someone’s home. The smell, the interior design, the choice of furniture, the layout—each home has its own energy and personality.

That’s why I describe websites as ‘digital homes.’ They create that same feeling, but in a digital space.

A website’s role is to communicate, convert, connect, and enhance a brand. Like a home, it can be welcoming, cozy, and personal. You carefully select each piece, layout, colors, typography, just as you would choose furniture, paint, and decor. This perspective transforms websites from being just a ‘marketing tool’ into something with personal meaning and depth.

This mindset shapes how I approach web design. As someone who loves interior design, treasures finding vintage pieces at antique stores, and enjoys watching interior designers share their homes on TikTok, I naturally bring that same energy and joy to website design.

Building a website doesn’t need to feel overwhelming. It should be an exciting opportunity to explore and create something meaningful. Start a Pinterest board to gather inspiration. Analyze websites you already admire. Take a closer look at your brand identity to discover how it can be reflected in your digital space. Collaborate with your web designer to brainstorm creative and strategic ideas. This process not only brings you closer to your brand but also ensures your website is as authentic and intentional as it can be. Most of my first-time website owners come to me with limited knowledge about creating a website. Their primary goal is to get their business up and running and reach new heights of success. That’s the focus, after all. But this journey doesn’t have to feel intimidating or stressful. Think of your website as the home where you’ll welcome strangers from around the world and long-time supporters alike. How do you want to curate that space? What story do you want it to tell? How do you want visitors to feel, empowered, serene, motivated, relaxed? What words or design elements will highlight your brand’s most important parts? Together, we can uncover those answers and build a digital home that truly represents you.
